A Cut-Out “囍” and a Compact Modern Chinese Favor Box

The couple wanted a wedding favor that felt modern and structured, while still retaining recognizable Chinese wedding elements.

Rather than using highly decorative packaging, the design focused on geometry, contrast, and material layering to reinterpret traditional symbols in a more contemporary way.

The Design

A Compact Square Box with Clear Structural Layers

The favor box used a classic square rigid box structure with a lid-and-base construction.

The exterior was finished in a muted matte burgundy red, giving the box a more restrained and contemporary appearance compared to traditional glossy wedding packaging.

A white welcome card was placed flat across the top surface of the box, covering most of the lid.

The card used large areas of negative space, framed by thin red borders, with neatly arranged bilingual typography in the center.

The most structural element of the design was the red cut-out “Double Happiness” sleeve positioned along one side of the box.

Made from a thicker material resembling felt or heavyweight specialty paper, the sleeve partially pressed over the white card and introduced an additional physical layer onto the otherwise flat surface.

The die-cut “囍” character transformed a traditional wedding symbol into a more geometric and architectural visual form.

After lifting the card and opening the lid, the interior shifted completely into black.

The black tray created a sharp separation from the outer red-and-white palette, introducing a stronger sense of contrast and visual focus.

Inside were individually wrapped Ferrero Rocher chocolates and Pulada snacks arranged tightly within the compact interior space.

Compact Scale and Controlled Capacity

The overall size of the box was intentionally compact, roughly palm-sized.

Using Ferrero Rocher chocolates as a scale reference, the box measured approximately 10–12 cm wide and around 5–6 cm tall.

The interior capacity was highly controlled and efficiently organized, designed to fit several standard sweets and snacks without leaving unnecessary empty space.

Rather than creating a sense of abundance through quantity, the design relied on structure, contrast, and presentation to establish refinement.

Client Feedback

“We liked that it still referenced traditional Chinese wedding symbols, but the overall presentation felt much cleaner and more modern.

The small size also worked really well on the reception tables because it looked more like part of the styling than bulky packaging.”
