When this couple came to us, they wanted their wedding favour to keep the auspicious symbolism of an Eastern wedding while still reflecting their own aesthetic.
They didn’t want a traditional “big red” wedding gift, yet they didn’t want to lose the warmth and joy of a wedding just for the sake of a modern feel.
In the end, the answer that satisfied both generations was a single koi fish.
Bringing the Vision to Life
The Craftsmanship and Textures
Instead of a conventional paper box, we wrapped the gift directly by hand in burgundy brocade satin. The fabric has a soft, pearly lustre, giving the whole box a quiet, richly layered Oriental elegance.
At the centre of the box sits a three-dimensional embroidered koi.
The red-and-white koi is outlined in gold thread, its scales overlapping one after another, its tail fin gently lifted, as if it has just leapt out of the water.
For the elders, it carries the well-wishes of “like a fish in water” and “a hall filled with gold and jade”. For the couple, it feels more like a vintage, artistic Eastern motif.
A Familiar Sweetness Inside
Opening the box reveals another kind of familiar sweetness.
Ferrero Rocher, Costa biscuits and Tim Hortons Western-style treats are placed side by side with White Rabbit candies, Fujiya lollipops and peanut brittle — and the combination is unexpectedly harmonious.
A friend might be reminded of childhood wedding candies at the sight of a White Rabbit, while the elders feel comforted by those familiar flavours.
Client Feedback
Their Reaction
“Especially the embroidered koi — the elders couldn’t stop praising it when they saw it. They said the symbolism was truly wonderful, and that it was as exquisite as a piece of art.”
